Why Is My House So Hot In Spain?
If your home in Málaga, Granada, Almería, Murcia or Alicante feels like an oven every summer, you’re not alone—and it’s not just “because it’s Spain.”
In the Spanish sun belt, most overheating comes from solar radiation pouring through windows and being trapped inside, turning rooms into greenhouses.
Why Is My House So Hot in Spain? (And How Solar Window Film Cools It Down)
If your home in Málaga, Granada, Almería, Murcia or Alicante feels like an oven every summer, you’re not alone—and it’s not just “because it’s Spain.” In the Spanish sun belt, most overheating comes from solar radiation pouring through windows and being trapped inside, turning rooms into greenhouses. The fix isn’t always more air‑con; it’s stopping the heat before it enters. At Out of the Sun in Spain, we install professional solar window film that slashes solar heat gain, lowers indoor temperatures and cuts cooling bills—without losing your views or natural light.
What This Means for a Typical Spanish Property
In a typical south‑ or west‑facing room or conservatory in Murcia, Alicante or the Costa del Sol:
- Expected indoor temperature reduction: 4–8°C on average, with peaks up to 8–10°C in very sunny rooms.
- Glass surface temperature: commonly 8–15°C cooler in full sun, depending on film and orientation.
This matches what we see in practice: a living room that used to reach 35–36°C in the late afternoon may now sit at 27–30°C, and the AC can hold 22–23°C with far less effort, saving you huge costs.
The Real Reasons Your House Gets So Hot in Spain
Windows Are the Main Heat Entry Point
- In Andalusia, Murcia and the Levante coast, the biggest summer battle is keeping heat out, not in. Ordinary double glazing can have a g‑value (solar heat gain coefficient) around 0.6–0.7, meaning 60–70% of the sun’s energy passes straight through. A south‑ or west‑facing window can transmit well over 1,000 W of thermal energy at midday—like running a powerful heater inside your home.
- Once sunlight hits floors, walls and furniture, those surfaces re‑radiate the energy as long‑wave heat that the glass won’t let escape. That’s the greenhouse effect in action, and it’s why rooms with large, unprotected windows can reach 35–40°C even when it’s “only” 30°C outside.
Orientation Matters (Especially West)
- South and west façades receive the most intense summer sun.
- West‑facing rooms are often the worst: low afternoon sun shines directly into the glass from around 3–7 pm, exactly when you want to relax at home.
- In many Spanish homes, bedrooms, living rooms and conservatories face these directions, making them the hottest spaces.
Construction, Insulation and Habits
Other factors that compound the problem:
- Thin walls, poor roof insulation and unshaded terraces let heat build up in the structure during the day and radiate it at night.
- Internal heat sources (ovens, hobs, dryers, TVs, computers, old lighting) add extra warmth.
- Ventilation at the wrong time (opening windows when it’s hotter outside than inside) traps heat instead of releasing it.
But even with good habits and decent insulation, unprotected glazing remains the single biggest source of summer overheating in typical Spanish villas and apartments
Why Air‑Con Alone Can’t Win
Air conditioning fights the symptoms, not the cause. If solar radiation keeps pumping kilowatts of heat through your windows:
- The AC runs constantly, struggling to maintain 22–24°C.
- Energy bills spike, especially in July and August.
- Some rooms still feel stuffy and uncomfortable despite the system being on.
- The system wears out faster and may need costly repairs or replacement.
In many properties we visit, the real issue is too much solar gain through glass, not an undersized AC unit. Reduce the solar load first, and the same system suddenly works easily and efficiently.
How Solar Window Film Solves the Problem
Solar window film is a thin, transparent coating applied to the inside of your existing glass. High‑performance films (like Hanita/Avery Dennison TITAN, Silver, etc.):
- Block 60–80% of solar heat (depending on the product and glass type), reducing the heat inside your property with 6-10°C.
- Block 99% of UV rays, protecting skin and furnishings
- Reduce glare while keeping the room bright and views clear, you can look at you favourite tele programm or computer without blackening out the room.
It works on existing windows, doors, conservatories and rooflights without replacing frames or glass
What Changes After Installation?
Typical results we see in Málaga, Granada, Almería, Murcia and Alicante:
- Glass surface temperatures drop by 8–15°C in full sun.
- Room temperatures fall by 6–10°C compared to before, especially in south/west rooms and conservatories.
- Air conditioning reaches the set temperature faster and runs far less.
- Many clients report €50–€150+ per month savings on cooling bills in peak summer, depending on the property and usage.
In practical terms: a living room that used to hit 34–36°C at 5 pm might now sit at 25–28°C, and the AC can easily hold 22–23°C without running non‑stop. Conservatories and sunrooms go from “unusable” to favourite rooms.

Where Solar Film Works Best
Solar window film is especially effective on:
- South‑ and west‑facing windows (living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens)
- Large glazed areas: sliding doors, bi‑folds, picture windows
- Conservatories, porches and sunrooms (often the hottest spaces in the house)
- Rooflights and skylights, where the sun hits the glass almost perpendicularly
- East‑facing rooms that overheat in the early morning
If you can point to a specific room that becomes unbearable between May and October, that’s usually an ideal candidate for solar film.
How Solar Film Fits Into a Complete Cooling Strategy
Solar film isn’t the only tool, but it’s one of the most effective. The best results come from combining measures:
- External shading first (where possible): awnings (toldos), persianas, lamas, shutters, trees. Blocking sun before it hits the glass is always powerful.
- Solar window film on windows and conservatories to cut the remaining heat that passes through.
- Smart ventilation: open windows early morning and late evening; keep them closed when outside is hotter than inside.
- Efficient AC use: once solar gain is reduced, your system can maintain comfort with shorter cycles and lower consumption.
Solar film is particularly valuable when external shading isn’t possible (communities, listed buildings, upper floors, glass roofs, etc.) or when you want to keep views and light.
FAQ
Why Is My House So Hot?
Isn’t it just the weather?
Summer in southern Spain is hot, but a well‑prepared home should stay comfortably cool. If your house regularly exceeds 30–32°C inside while the outside shade temperature is similar, the building is letting in too much solar energy—mainly through windows.
Will window film make my rooms dark?
Not necessarily. Modern solar films come in different shades and performances. Many options reduce heat significantly while keeping rooms bright and views clear. We choose films based on your orientation, glass type and how much tint you’re comfortable with.
How long does installation take?
Most homes are completed in 1–2 days, depending on the number of windows and conservatories. We work room by room, with minimal disruption. You can usually use the windows again within 24–48 hours, with full curing over the next few weeks.
How long does solar film last?
Quality solar films installed professionally typically last 12–18+ years, with manufacturer warranties often covering performance and durability. Proper cleaning and care extend their life further. We do give a guarantee on film and installation for interior films of 10 years and exterior films for 5 years.
Can I install film myself?
DIY films exist, but professional installation ensures:
- Correct film selection for your glass and orientation
- Bubble‑free, dust‑free application
- Proper edge sealing and longevity
- Compliance with any community or warranty requirements
For a permanent solution on a valuable asset like your home, professional installation is strongly recommended
